Many obese people who need to lose weight rapidly seek the help of a very low-calorie diet, also called VLCD. These diets are doctor-supervised and it usually uses commercially prepared formulas to promote rapid weight loss in patients. Because they generate rapid weight loss, you have to consult your physicians prior to using them. They need to be used under proper medical supervision throughout the whole duration.
These diets, usually come as formulas in liquid shakes or bars and replace all food intake
for several weeks or months. VLCD formulas need to contain appropriate
levels of vitamins and micronutrients to ensure that patients meet
their nutritional requirements.
In extreme cases, some physicians also prescribe VLCDs
made up almost entirely of lean protein foods, such as fish and
chicken. People on a VLCD consume about 800 calories per day or less.
There's a big difference between VLCDs and the weight loss shakes and bars you find in stores. These must be prescribed by a doctor and you will take them under supervision. Source: National Institutes of Health
