How do I know if I'm overweight or obese?

If you wonder whether you're overweight or obese, the best way is to find out your body mass index (BMI). BMI is a measure of body fat based on height and weight. There are many BMI calculators online. People with a BMI of 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight. People with a BMI of 30 or more are considered obese. Because the BMI is calculated based on your gender, weight, and height, there's a difference between big and small frame also. A person with big frame should naturally weight a little more than a small framed person.

Once you find out your BMI, you can set a goal of losing enough weight to have a BMI under 25. Although it is much harder for people who're over 45 to have BMI less than 25 since you burn less calories as you age. And the fat seems to accumulate around your waist much more than it did during your younger days.

Waist size now is considered to be the biggest factor in deciding whether you're at risk for heart disease or other serious problems. So if you BMI is over 25 or close to be 30, however if the fat is concentrated on your lower body or upper body and your middle section is not that bad, you are in much better situation than someone who has a big waist.
